Golf trips: The “phenomenon” Dubai

Dubai is a phenomenon for me, every 10 years it is different again. Anything seems possible there and that fascinates people from all over the world.

I was in Dubai for the first time in the nineties, then every 10 years. In the meantime, this is probably no longer enough, the desert state is changing so quickly. Bigger and bigger, more and more bombastic. Of course, this is a matter of taste, but the destination is always fascinating, and not just because of all the luxury brands that present themselves here.

One of the things I personally like about Dubai is the top service, which is also evident on the golf courses. From the reception to the club cleaning after the round, everything fits together here. There is a large selection of golf courses, specifically 13 courses in or around Dubai. My personal favorites include Dubai Hills, the Earth Course and Majlis. As is well known, this was the first grass golf course in the Middle East, and just one year after it opened in 1988, the then European Tour made its first guest appearance on the highly challenging Majlis course and continues to do so to this day.

Dubai Hills only opened in 2018, but quickly established itself as one of the absolute top places in the region. Not only the view of Burj Khalifa is spectacular. The entire course, the fairways and the design are simply superb. The same naturally applies to the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estate. The grand final of the DP World Tour has been played there since 2009. Every year in November, the top 60 players start here for the final of the Race to Dubai. This is how we know the square from television and

is always amazed at how beautiful and how difficult Greg Norman’s 18 holes become in his own game.

Of course, all these top courses have corresponding prices, but golfers from all over the world hardly appreciate the service and the top facilities. Dubai is booming and so is tourism.

The choice of hotels is correspondingly huge. My personal tip if you like being on the beach. Choose accommodation close to Jumeirah Beach, for example. The hotels on the artificial islands are often spectacular, but not really practical. The authorities can barely keep up with the construction of roads, so traffic jams are as much a part of the cityscape of booming Dubai as the skyscrapers.

If you want, you can easily rent a car and drive yourself, which is by no means the case in all destinations. And if you’ve had enough of the big city, you don’t even have to drive very far: Endless deserts, mountains over 3000 meters high, simple life in remote oases and hidden Bedouin villages – this is also part of the Dubai phenomenon.
