Golf trips Ireland: Guinness and golf

Whether Scotland or Ireland is (also) a matter of taste. In terms of food and drink, but of course also because of the often truly spectacular courses on the island, Ireland is a real alternative to the “motherland” of golf.

With the Genesis Scottish Open starting on July 11 and, above all, the 152. With “The Open” taking place at Royal Troon a week later, Scotland should be very well attended this July. It’s worth taking a look at the surrounding area for special Ireland golf trips in summer.

Ireland’s capital Dublin has long been a hot spot for golf tourists from all over the world. There are countless opportunities to play around the capital. In total, the island offers more than 400 golf clubs, including a third of the world’s natural links courses. So it’s no wonder that over 240,000 golfers from all over the world come to the island every year. Soon there will probably be even more. In the summer of 2025, “The Open” will take place at Royal Portrush, followed two years later by the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.

Before these major events, it is worth visiting the Cork region in the southwest of the island, for example. The city itself impresses with its trendy cafés, interesting art galleries, unusual museums and outrageously good pubs. Despite its status as a city, you can still feel the lifestyle of a small town here: relaxed and without excessive stress.

Of course, this also applies to the golf courses in the region. The most spectacular of all is certainly the Old Head, just under an hour south of Cork. Here, all 18 holes are within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, on seemingly endless cliffs. The experience is not cheap, but worth every euro.

Of course, this also applies to many other great places such as Ballybunion. It is also worth the two-hour drive from Cork. The club was founded in 1893, and during the week guests are also allowed to play on the two top courses of the private club. Again and again, you stand on a tea box and marvel. Marvel at the wild nature, marvel at the undulating fairways and marvel at how strong the wind can blow by the sea.

Just south of Ballybunion is another jewel that golfers simply have to play: The Tralee golf course, a masterpiece of nature and Jack Nicklaus.

The pubs are of course part of the special experience, almost always with live music and always with plenty of Guinness. Over a beer, you can easily get in touch with the fun locals. And the Irish are even easier to understand than the Scots.

Incidentally, Edelweiss has been flying directly from Zurich to Cork for some time now, and there are also daily flights to the capital Dublin.
